We've had a great reception to Modeling Autumn Scenery - in fact we've had to order more books!!
When we first embarked on this Artisan Rail journey I knew I wanted to self-publish. I also knew that stocking, shipping, and fulfilling orders can also be a less than enjoyable experience. We seriously considered doing some sort of print on demand - but a book on fall colors is literally all about color, so we wanted a lot of control over appearance of the images in the finished volume.
We also felt it important to have the books printed here in the US rather than overseas. The end result was a book that was perhaps
a little pricier than I would have liked - but I put the quality of the finished book up against anything that's been published for the model railroad field.
I also wrote a book deliberately aimed at somewhat experienced model railroaders who look upon model railroading as not only a technical hobby but a creative avocation - using the word "Artisan" in the name of the company was a deliberate choice.
So Modeling Autumn Scenery wasn't aimed at beginners but there may be room for future growth in that area. Mind you, there's nothing in the techniques and information this first book that are beyond the reach of a newcomer to model railroading, but we saw a need for books and information targeted at those model railroaders who are past the beginner stage and looking to advance in the hobby.
With all that said, the target market and the desire to control, and deliver the best product we possibly could, we placed an order for an initial print run of the books. I took glance at the total and, with more than a little trepidation, pushed "Purchase!"
Frankly, I thought the order would carry our projected sales through the end of the summer - maybe even the end of the year.
So I was more than a little surprised and thrilled when I noticed our remaining inventory had dropped to less than 20 books!
Fear not if you haven't placed an order yet - a new shipment of books will be here later this week.
Christine and I want to thank all our wonderful customers who have already ordered from us and we look forward to doing business with you again in the future! Any suggestions as to what direction we might take next?

Hello Marty,
First of all, I really am enjoying your book. What sticks with me most is your description of where fall colors lie during the different periods. My color blind ass needed that in a huge way! That small chart and your description has helped me get a clear idea of what I am aiming for.
I for one am interested in the operations of the period you model and the challenges of the unique paper mill yard switching challenge.
One thought about where next is maybe expand on how you sceniced the large grassy areas and the the river pours as to where the meet the layout edges.
I am not much help on your question her…
